Walking With Words is a collaborative interactive typographic student exhibition featuring poems by Inaugural Community Artist in Residence and Visiting Scholar at The Hub, Sierra Leone. The University of Dayton, Department of Art and Design’s, graphic design students took part in an experiential learning, community-based project with Assistant Professor, Misty Thomas-Trout. This exhibition celebrates community, inclusivity and diversity. The first exhibition of its kind at The Hub, powered by PNC Bank, this work showcases the actions of connections, imagination, learning and linking experiences into tangible outcomes as the words move through the space—literally and metaphorically. Sierra’s words find a way into our hearts. Students have visualized her words and stories to result in deepening the human connections within these works. The results of this experiential collaboration undoubtedly will leave the viewer feeling.

This exhibition extends beyond the walls of The Hub and moves throughout the City of Dayton. Start the journey at the entrance of The Hub and move into the main corridor with the core body of the exhibit on the second floor. Next stop, walk across the street to the Levitt Pavilion. From there walk two blocks over to the Downtown Dayton Metro Library. Once you have finished these explorations, head across the bridge to the Historical Wright Dunbar District to experience the final two stops at Greater West Dayton Incubator and EbonNia Gallery.

We invite you to enjoy the collaboration of poetry, typography, graphic design and art through visual interpretations of Walking With Words. As the audience, we encourage you to interact, imagine and share your thoughts, listen, leave questions, and remember to be creative.
